More Black and White Portraits

Are you the next Banksy

A competition run by the One Small Seed magazine was about creating a social/political work that is innovative and speaks out about the youths opinions. I created a installation on the steps of Cape Town City Hall, the location where Nelson Mandela gave his freedom speech. My work is about freedom and the diversity of races in South Africa. I made over 1000 origami butterflies that symbolized the flight of freedom. The colours represent the colours of the different races and is put in the South African flag shape. yet as the flag moves up the steps the butterflies intergrate and take flight. A piece about the segregated past, the intergrating present and the mixed future.

Lollypop Girl

Lollypop Girl is a 3D paper character i made in first year. I decided to let her have her own photoshoot and included the GermJanitor for extra personality, as well as the stuffed animal:) I love making tangible characters that are simple yet effective.

Print Making

My first Lino print work. It was about celebrating South African Brands and i chose Lucky Star pilchards.

I found a friend, illustraction

My first attempt at Illustrating my own characters. A child has found his imaginary friend in the attic. Which is a smarty laned wonderland that this creature lives in.

Unpacking the Bag

Unpacking the bag is a series of charcoal drawings exploring material and composition.

Expanding the Narrative

A little something I worked on called Expanding the Narrative. Pencil Drawing with a light blue gouache for the hazard signs. It is a contradictory piece of this man smoking and one can see the land is bear and dry. Mainly concerning the issues of the effects of smoking on one's self and the earth.

Postcard designs for the welcoming of the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa. I took a local brand, being Ouma's Rusks and played a twist on it with Afrikaans slagan (a South African language). My slogan was "Jou Ouma se Rusks" and basically was talking about the diverse culture groups in South Africa. Ouma means Grandmother in Afrikaans and by taking the iconic brand i took photographs of different grandmothers of different races and cultures representing South Africa and the brand. One postcard had to be type driven, then image driven and then one being type and image driven. My slogan made up the rows of boxes on the shelf of Oumas Rusks and type made image. In the image postcard a twist was added to the rusks by having a young lady use them as hair curlers. Thus being she used her Ouma's Rusks to curl her hair. The last postcard is the type and image and i took the Ouma Rusks logo and replaced the old lady illustration with my different Grandmothers i photographed. I had tomake some changes to the project and thus is why there are two versions.

What the Font is a made up magazine that deals with topics on typography. We had to design the layout for this magazine by designing the front and back cover and a double page spread. My double page spread dealt with the typeface Helvetica and "Whats the Fuss with Helvetica." I created little icons that resembled mass produced products with the use of Helvetica. Such as Helveti - oogler, being a play on Google. We were only allowed to use black and white, no colour and so this is my design from second year.

Tissue box design that had to be interactive and reinventive on your average tissue boxes in the store today. My tissue box is targeted for children age between 2 and 8. It is a germjanitor that helps get rid of your cold y taking it on himself. playful friend that when the tissues are finished, can be played with. Mom or Dad help the child to create this little creature by cutting along the dotted lines indicated. The head pops up, the arms pop out and the legs became 3D. Fun little friend when the flus got you in bed.
